Sprint HIIT Workout template

One of my favorite ways to get cardio in is to do HIIT workouts.  HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training.  High-intensity workouts have been shown to help burn fat, increase metabolism, and increase endurance.  These are just a few reasons why I do these workouts.  Another is that the workouts are usually shorter than most cardio.  Plus, it’s a good excuse to do sprints.  I was a sprinter in college, and this is an excellent way for me to get some sprinting in.

Here is the workout that I do for my sprint HIIT on the treadmill.  It’s a pyramid style sprint ladder.  Reminds me of my love-hate relationship from track practice!  It is an easy one minute on one minute off for the sprints.  Either stand on the sides of the treadmill or turn it down to a jog.  I usually turn it down to a jog and then start turning it back up before the minute is over.

  Time Speed
Warm Up 5 minutes 6.5
Spring 1 minute 7.2
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.4
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.6
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 8.0
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.6
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.4
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.2
Jog 1 minute 6.5
Sprint 1 minute 7.0
Cool down 5 minutes 6.5

A reminder that everyone’s treadmill is different so go at a speed that works for you and your treadmill.  If you have time some treadmills offer a user setting to build an interval, I’ve never taken the time to use this setting on mine.  Sometimes I’ll even sprint for two minutes at the 8mph mark. Other modifications are to do this at an incline or on a spin bike.
